2008-present Senior scientist at Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Dept. Limnology of Stratified Lakes

Research Interests

- Calcite precipitation and its ecological role
- Food web interactions
- Lake Stechlin research
- Long-term ecological development of stratified lakes
- Primary production of phytoplankton
- Restoration and management of lakes
- Whole lake ecosystem experiments

Research Strategy

At present my department manages five laboratories: Microbial Ecology, Molecular Ecology, Phytoplankton and Primary Production, Sediment Microbiology, Zooplankton and Secondary Production. The combined expertise of these "Lake Stechlin" laboratories (IGB N) and of the whole institute in Berlin (IGB) provides an exceptional breadth of knowledge which does not only advance our understanding of the structure and function of lake ecosystems but also provides new insights into the ecological controling and engineering of freshwater ecosystems. Both basic and applied research methods are used to examine complex processes in lakes. Such knowledge is a perquisite for the widespread use of ecotechnologies in the field of effective and ecologically water resource management. Deep stratified lakes and experimental lakes in the northeastern part of the Baltic lake region of Germany form the basis of these research activities. Lake Stechlin is of special importance with respect to long-term ecological research and for comparisons with other lakes. The successful cooperation among limnologists, hydrologists, and fish ecologists and the advantageous location of the Department on the shores of Lake Stechlin within the Brandenburg-Mecklenburg Lake District, provide the most favourable conditions for a successful research endeavour.
